Speech Team Competes in Carry on Classic
North Pointe's Speech Team competed in their first speech tournament at the Mesa High School Carry On Classic
and did exceptionally well. Kaylar Hallock competed in the Humorous Interpretation category and earned a total of
95 points. Brandi-Lynn Warren (who goes by the name of Sapphire) also competed in the Humorous
Interpretation category and earned a total of 95 points, tying with Kaylar. Michael Denim earned a total of 100
points in the Serious Prose category and both he and Amber Farmer made an impressive 125 points in the Duo
Acting category and barely missed placing by two points.
To prepare for the tournament, the team worked for two months on monologues, critiquing, and encouraging each
other. The fact that this was the first tournament for everyone, except Michael Denim, is especially impressive.
Students were able to understand and see first hand the dedication and commitment needed to excel at a
competition level against other schools. “It was definitely an eye opening experience," said Farmer. "I didn’t know
just how seriously people take this, and now I’m one of them.”
The team, and any students interested in competing next year on the Speech Team, will be observing the final
rounds of the 5A Schools where the best of the best will be competing for a spot at the national competition.
Interested student should see Mr. Ward for details.
“I couldn’t be any prouder of our team," said Mr. Ward. "These students gave up many lunches, time before and
after school, and even some Saturdays to prepare for this tournament. We have the potential to be a team to beat
but even more importantly, the team members are having fun with this and learning how to speak effectively in
front of other people on a professional level. These are skills that students will use for the rest of their lives.
