The Prep's Junior drumming sensation Stephen Hutson has 3-
peated as a member of the All-State Band as 5th chair
percussion.
Hutson was named to the Southwest Regional Band for his third
consecutive year placing 1st chair percussion. At regionals, he
received the highest rating of superior on his four-mallet
marimba solo in the Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival.
Students from 38 high schools, ranging from 2A to 5A,
competed for positions in the Southwest Regional Band,
Orchestra, and Choir. There are a total of 8 regions in Arizona.
North Pointe students faced tough competition from schools
such as Mountain Ridge, Dobson, Chandler, and Deer Valley.
Hutson has been accepted to participate in a two week
percussion camp this summer at Juilliard School of Music in New
York City. Over 50 students applied for the camp and only 16
were chosen.
Audition requirements included selections on snare drum,
timpani, 2 mallet keyboard (marimba) and 4 mallet keyboard
(marimba). While in New York, Hutson will stay in the Meredith
Wilson residence at Juilliard, which is part of the Lincoln Center
complex in downtown New York.
During the two intensive weeks in the exciting cultural
environment of New York 's Lincoln Center, students will pursue
hands-on study of all the major percussion instruments: two and
four-mallet keyboard, snare drum, timpani, and orchestral
accessories.
In addition, students will be introduced to world hand drums,
percussion chamber music, and both multi- and solo-percussion
repertoire. Seminar participants will experience a challenging
range of master classes, clinics, lectures, rehearsals, and
performances—all of this activity focused on preparing them for
success in conservatory and college auditions.
