Nielsen's 'Juliet' steals show & Romeo's heart
This weekend, the Prep's incredible Spring Fling week wrapped-up with the highly anticipated performance of William
Shakespeare's classic tragedy 'Romeo and Juliet'. The Prep's High School Theatre department brought the tale to
life with an edgy 1980's punk flair, which included an amazing industrial warehouse/club setting, and featured

costumes, hairstyles, and music from the period.
Brettoni Nielson, as Juliet, stole the show (and Romeo's
heart) in a wonderful interpretation of the role. "She was
awesome!" said Ms. Stone, North Pointe's High School Theatre
Director. "She struck a good balance between the sweetness
and intensity that Juliet needs."
This was Nielsen's first part in a Prep Theatre presentation.
"Brett was in one of my Theatre classes a couple of years ago
and ever since I have been trying to get her to audition."
Although Nielsen is new to the Prep Theatre stage, she is very
comfortable performing in front of audiences having recently
been a member of North Pointe's Varsity Cheer Competition
Team which won a State Title at the Jobing.com arena in
Glendale and a National Title at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.
An excellent performance was also turned-in by Quentin
Shoemaker, who played Romeo, a tortured soul who finds love
in the most unlikely of places. "Its hard to play romeo because
its easy to be sappy when your in love," said Ms. Stone.
"Quentin is just rough enough around the edges that he's
believable and we didn't laugh at romeo - we sympathized with
him."
Although the story initially appears to showcase difficult themes
such as murder, abuse, revenge and suicide, the tale is actually
intended to be a cautionary one. The principle characters live
in an oppressive society in which they are tormented by their
families' unjustified hatred of each other, and their love cannot
stop this biogtry from affecting their lives. It is a theme that is
universal, as it teaches us all that love can bridge barriers
between enemies, but that violence and hatred often cause
pain and anguish for even the ones we hold most dear.
