In an incredible showing, North Pointe's Debate Team
placed 1st in the Novice category for Lincoln Douglas
Debate at Sandra Day O'Connor's practce competitive
tournament. The Prep beat out such schools as
Mountain Point High School and Tempe Union High
School.
The tournament, which drew 25 schools, was the first of
the 2007-2008 debate season and included schools
from all AIA divisions - 1A to 5A. The primary purpose of
the tournament was to prepare debate students for the
rigors of competition season. The categories ranged
from the Novice category (beginning debate students) to
the Advanced category (those students with experience
in debate).

The entire Prep team was in the Novice category since this is the first year of competition for North Pointe. As the
tournament began and the first of four rounds were completed, morale was high. However, as the day wore on, the
team began to feel as if they were out of their league and morale slipped.
Coach Troy Ward tried to keep his team motivated, reminding students that this was the first debate tournament the
Prep had ever attended and that the tournament was meant to be a learning experience so that the team would feel
comfortable at the next competition.
When the totals were finally announced at just after 10:00 pm, the team was surprised at their 1st place finish.
Hannah Marquardt and Noel Palamino were the big winners of the day in the Novice Lincoln Douglas category - with
three rounds won apiece. Karen Ratliff, Marissa Patterson, Halea Hendrix, Brea Hendrix, and Javin Silao all won two
rounds apiece. Zach Swift, Kaylar Hallock, and Laura McGammon all won one round each in the competition.
The total possible points for the entire tournament was 2000 and the Prep narrowly beat out Mountain Point with a
total of 1630 points to 1625.
“This has already been such an amazing experience for this team considering we weren’t supposed to even be a
team this year," said Coach Ward. "I already coach the Prep's Speech Team with 23 team members which is a lot,
but I had this handful of kids who wanted to debate competitively. I told them from the beginning that this would be
more hard work than any of them had ever done before but they still wanted to try. Two months and at least a
hundred or more hours later of hard work researching information and practicing, here we are."
