Fox 10 reporter creates 'news' out of rumors
On what was clearly a very slow news day, Fox
News reporter Steve Kraft went live on the Channel
10 Tuesday, April 29th, 5:00 pm news with a story
Welcome to the home of the North Pointe Falcons
|

been suspended for protesting the firing of a teacher
who refused to change grades for athletes.
Prior to going live, Kraft actually interviewed the teacher off camera. She told him that she was not fired, had not
been disciplined, and was not asked to give athletes special treatment with regards to grades. He was also told that
the students were not disciplined for a lunch-time 'sit-in' (some students gathered and ate their lunch in the center of
the courtyard instead of in the Prep Cafe and at the shaded outdoor lunch tables) but 33 were suspended for one
day for refusing to go to class.
When Kraft was asked why he was going to go ahead with a story that had no factual basis, he said that his
producer was forcing him to do the story, "That's what the people want to watch," said Kraft. "I'm sure you have
heard the saying, 'If it bleeds, it leads.'" When told about the Prep's Troop Tribute 2008 and asked why that was
not worth covering - a positive factual story about students caring enough about the Troops to donate thousands of
dollars in supplies for them - Kraft said that the story would not be visual enough. "We have to fill over 7 hours of
news each day," Kraft said. "We are always looking for stories, but they have to be visual and interesting enough
for people to watch."
Kraft did go live with the story. In fact, it was important enough to producers that it was the second story of the
newscast. Unfortunately, all Kraft and Fox 10 News did was validate and affirm students who created confusion by
dispensing misinformation and rumors which were based upon assumptions - not fact.
Not only was the story based upon false information, there were many, many factual errors in his reporting. In fact,
Kraft actually shifted from reporter to expert analyst (even though he has never been a school administrator or
teacher) and ended the story saying that the suspensions were "harsh."
Since the story was broadcast a week ago, preptv has attempted to contact Fox 10 News producers for a better
understanding of why a non-factual story was so important. At first, calls were transferred to voice mail and
messages were left. After the third day, calls were just hung up on. So, in response to Fox 10 News and Kraft's
reporting, preptv has put together a video piece, "The Top 10 reasons why Fox News is not fair and not balanced."
