

Literature & Composition III (for the Class of 2012 only)
The Literature and Composition III course is designed to develop the student’s ability to read and comprehend literature and other
writing by authors from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and to analyze and evaluate literature and other writing in a variety of
genres, such as nonfiction prose, fiction prose, poetry, and drama. In addition to being able to functionally write in rhetorical modes
such as argumentation, exposition, narration, and description using the rhetorical strategies of exemplification, definition, comparison,
and contrast, the students will learn to creatively write in a variety of genres, including nonfiction prose, fiction prose, poetry, and drama.

World Literature & Composition
World Literature is the focus of this college preparatory class. In addition to literature study, students will focus on their writing skills and
building their vocabulary.

American Literature & Composition
Literature II covers American literature from the colonial period through this century. The literature is studied by historical periods, while
addressing the philosophical movements that influenced literature. Representative authors are William Bradford, Benjamin Franklin,
Nathanial Hawthorn, Henry David Thoreau, Herman Melville, Samual Clemens and Thorton Wilder. Students’ critical thinking skills are
honed through literary analysis.

British Literature & Composition
British Literature covers the history of literature from the Anglo-Saxon period through the post modernism. Chaucer, Shakespeare,
Dickens, Rand, Stoppard, and Hardy are representative of the authors studied. Advanced writing skills are honed through a survey of
rhetorical structure.

English Literature & Composition AP
The Advanced Placement Literature and Composition course includes an intensive study of representative works from various genres
and periods, concentrating on works of recognized literary merit. The course is designed to engage students in the careful reading and
critical analysis of imaginative literature, so as to help them deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide
both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students will do annotation, considering the structure, style and theme of the
work as well as its smaller-scale elements such as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. They will then do
analytical writing to evaluate a literary work by making and explaining judgments about its artistry and exploring its underlying social and
cultural values. In addition, students will explore their own thought processes and creativity by doing free writing and developing
personal journals.

English 101 (UL) (Fall)
ENG101 is a dual enrollment class that teaches writing and composition. Various rhetorical strategies are analyzed. Students write four
essays and present one paper

Length: 1 Semester
Prerequisite: Rio Salado Accuplacer. These classes are open to qualifying juniors and seniors. Students need to have 2 semester
track record of subject GPA over 3.0. A passing grade on AIMS reading and writing is required and so is Literature teacher’s
recommendation and approval of the college liaison.
English 102 (UL) (Spring)
ENG102 is a dual enrollment class that focuses on the rhetorical strategy of Argumentation. Students write one 15 page argumentative
research paper.

Speech
Speech is a course that provides the student with a foundation of speech communication with emphasis given to preparation,
organization, composition and delivery of the extemporaneous speech. Students study modern communication theory, classical
rhetoric and traditional logic. Students also develop research skills including note-taking, the works cited page and the use of a variety
of research tools. Students present speeches including the speech to inform, the speech to persuade, the debate speech and the
problem solving group discussion.

Advanced Speech
Advanced Speech provides experiences for all students to appreciate the various facets of both interpersonal communication and
public speaking. Advanced Speech and Debate utilizes these concepts and expounds upon them integrating various acting
techniques, peer reviews, and self-analysis to allow the student to grow as a public speaker. The course emphasizes reading
informational text, researching, evaluating information, and writing speeches along with performance of these.
