Earth Science & Astronomy (H)
This course is designed to scientifically explore the subject of astronomy and our place in the Universe. Study will
include the origin and history of the Universe, formation of the Earth and solar system. Students will discuss the
impact of astronomical developments on history and culture.
Grade: 9
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: None
Chemistry (H)
This course provides a solid foundation of knowledge in chemistry. The study of elements, compounds, chemical
reactions, and the use of technology and laboratory investigations utilizing real-world applications are developed.
Topics include acids & bases, chemical names, nuclear chemistry, organic chemistry, oxidation-reduction reactions,
reaction rates & equilibrium, and water & aqueous systems.
Grade: 10
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Algebra I, Biology
Advanced Astronomy (H)
This is an introductory science course which will provide a broad overview of the Earth sciences. Topics covered will
include geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy. Grading in this class will primarily be based on quizzes
and tests, although a scientific paper will also be assigned each quarter for students to complete.
Grade: 12
Length: 2 semesters
Prerequisite: Chemistry
Anatomy & Physiology (UL/AP)
This course introduces the student to the structure and function of living organisms. Students will learn and
understand the principles of cell theory, mechanisms of heredity, behavior of organisms, the historical significance of
major biological advances, and laboratory investigations. Students will be expected to design and conduct an
experiment to investigate a question, solve a problem and defend an idea. This course prepares students for the
Advanced Placement exam.
Grade: 12
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Biology or Instructor approval
Forensic Science (Fall)
This course is designed to introduce students to an overview of the field of forensic science. Students will have
opportunity to employ scientific methods for the examination
of physical evidence as it applies to the criminal justice system. The information in this course is used in occupations
such as criminal justice, law enforcement, insurance investigation, forensic science and law.
Grade: 9-12
Length: 1 semester
Prerequisite: none
Ecology (Spring)
This course will examine the terrestrial ecosystems of Arizona. Topics include population dynamics, succession, fire
ecology, and survival mechanisms such as hibernation and migration. Students will learn to identify native plants and
animals which inhabit these ecosystems and will use topographical maps to identify the topography and key
landmarks of an area.
Grade: 9-12
Length: 1 semester
Prerequisite: none
Physics (H)
This course provides a strong foundation in study of matter, energy and the rules that govern the natural world.
Students will learn and apply concepts in this course to real-world situations and the other sciences through
laboratory investigations and other activities. Topics include measurement, motion, forces, gravity, momentum, work,
energy, states of matter, sound, light, the electromagnetic spectrum, electricity and magnetism.
Grade: 11
Length: 2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Algebra I
Advanced Physics
This course will take a more in-depth look at the topics covered in the introductory physics course, with a heavy
emphasis on the mathematical laws that govern the various theories. Students will utilize concepts they learned in
both chemistry and physics in order to gain a deeper comprehension of the laws that govern the physical world. A
college-level text will be used and this course will be geared towards preparing students for the Advanced Placement
exam at the end of the year.
Grade: 12
Length: 2 semesters
Prerequisite: Physics, Algebra II (or concurrent)
