JH Arts Electives Classes

Jr. High Arts Elective Curriculum

Beginning Art
An introduction to the basic elements of art; line, color, value, shape, and texture. Students will learn the seven Elements of Art and how to incorporate them in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional work; color theory and the ability to mix colors; and the development of a good composition.
Grade: 7-8 (Elective)          Length: 1 Semester          Prerequisite: $25 per semester fee


Beginning Guitar/Piano     
No prior musical training is needed for this class. Students will learn the basics of playing the acoustic guitar and piano. Students learn and utilize the fundamentals of music notation, music reading skills, tone production, intonation, elements of music theory, and listening skills as well as development of proper attitude with emphasis on group participation. Students perform at various school events.
Grade: 7-8 (Elective)          Length: 1 Semester          Prerequisite: None


Jr. High Band
This course is designed to develop skills learned in Beginning Band. Students perform at junior high events, junior high games and concerts. Students perform at Jr. High events and Winter and Spring Arts Festivals.
Grade: 7-8 (Elective)      Length: 2 Semesters      Prerequisite: $25 per semester fee


Jr. High Choir
Jr. High Choir is an elective course that introduces students to the fundamentals of musical language, vocal technique and musicianship.  Students learn basic music theory, listening skills, and performance skills. No prior musical training is needed for enrollment in this class. Students perform at Winter and Spring Arts Festivals.

Jr. High Percussion I     
Jr. High Percussion I class is especially for beginning or brand new percussionists. The class will cover reading music and rhythms, and beginning techniques and performance on all major mallet instruments such as marimbas, xylophones and vibraphones, and drum instruments such as snare drum, tenors, and bass drums. This class is a great way to begin preparation for possible involvement in the schools high school competition percussion team. This group may perform at school events and members are required to attend rehearsals, after school sectional practice and all scheduled performances. Absences, during the school year, to rehearsals, practices and performances could affect a student's grade.

Jr. High Percussion II     
Jr. High Percussion II class is designed for students who have already gone through Percussion I and are looking to continue their percussion journey. This class will be for learning more complex percussion rudiments on drums and more complex music using four mallets on the mallet instruments. A must have if you are serious about percussion and want to compete once in high school. This group may perform at school events and members are required to attend rehearsals, after school sectional practice and all scheduled performances. Absences, during the school year, to rehearsals, practices and performances could affect a student's grade.

Jr. High Theatre
Jr. High Theatre is an elective course designed to introduce students to the basic elements of theatre arts.  This class covers theatre history, theatre vocabulary and terminology and acting.  Activities include pantomime, vocal practice, impromptu, monologues, and scene acting.  Tests will include vocabulary and history.  All performances will be graded using performance rubrics.  No prior theatrical training is needed for enrollment in this class. Students perform at Winter and Spring Arts Festivals.
